Origins and Founding Vision
Catty Shack Ranch was founded in 1990 by Jane Barclay and Beverly Barbier, two women driven by a shared concern for the welfare of big cats kept in captivity under inadequate or exploitative conditions. Their vision was rooted in the belief that large cats, often used in circuses, roadside attractions, or private ownership, deserved safe, spacious habitats and lifelong care.
At the time, public awareness of the challenges faced by captive exotic cats was limited. Many animals were kept in small cages, deprived of enrichment, and subjected to stressful conditions. The founders recognized the urgent need for a sanctuary that would provide:
- Permanent Shelter: Ensuring rescued cats had safe, naturalistic habitats for the remainder of their lives.
- Ethical Care: Implementing standards of nutrition, veterinary oversight, and environmental enrichment.
- Public Education: Raising awareness about the plight of big cats in captivity and promoting responsible wildlife stewardship.
From the outset, Catty Shack Ranch positioned itself as both a refuge for animals and a platform for advocacy, bridging the gap between rescue operations and public engagement. shutdown123
